Darth is a slightly modified SONY Vaio RX-550. It's primary purpose it doing high-end video capture and playback, playing games, and compiling projects. Darth was a mid-range when purchased, and replaced a sorely outdated P1/200Mhz system named Maharet.
One major undertaking for Darth was installing Win98. Darth came with WinXP Home installed, but the wonderful new OS was not meant for video capture, and several devices to be inherated from Maharet would not work under XP. For those trying to convert their RX-550 into a Win98 machine, I have compiled a list of drivers you will need to have for Win98 to be effective. Unfortunatly, with some of the hardware I simply couldn't use the SONY solution (memory stick), or was unable to extract the needed software from the SONY "recovery" CDs (DVD/CDRW software ). The SONY rep basicly laughed and hung up when I asked for Win98 drivers. They only support XP or above on this box.
All in all, the conversion back to Win98 was worth it. Please let me know if you have a RX-550 that you've altered, especaily if you've gotten the software from SONY to work under a non-XP configuration.
SONY sucks big donkey nuts! But their hardware is priced well, so...
